Crystallise

My friend and I took a little trip to see some art last Sunday; I say a little trip because it took us about an hour to get there. We headed to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Tokyo (Mot) to see Tokujin Yoshioka's exhibition Crystallise.

Prepare to be amazed by an exhibition that connects the audience with nature. Yoshioka's works of art are the result of a fine balance between architecture and nature. Inspired by Henri Matisse, the artist recreates natural light distorted by stained glass Church windows in an architectural installation called Rainbow Church. In another room, crystal paintings are taking form with the vibrations of Swan Lake. The exhibition evokes scenes from a faraway winter-land, where natural formations seem to be delicately orchestrated by Yoshioka.

San Rafael

Whilst in Argentina last month, we decided to take a short trip to San Rafael. San Rafael is the second most important city of the province of Mendoza, Mendoza city being the capital and most prominent one. Surrounded by countryside, the city is known for it’s production of wine, olive oil, nuts and fruits. The combination of the soil and climate, produce the best olive oil in Argentina and excellent wines. During our stay we visited never-ending vineyards, a couple of small wineries and other plantations. San Rafael, they say, is blessed with 300 days of sun a year. Surprisingly, we arrived on a cold and rainy night and woke up to a gelid white landscape. It wasn't long before the sun melted down the snow.

Infinite Obsession

I happened to be in Argentina during Malba's retrospective of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The exhibition brought Kusama's polka dot mania to Buenos Aires - the big red dots were everywhere: on cars, trees, billboards. Curious and anxious visitors queued outside the museum to visit the exhibition everyone was talking about.

This was the biggest exhibition of the Japanese artist in Latin America. Curated by Philip Larrat-Smith and Frances Morris, the retrospective took the visitor on a journey through Kusama's troubled mind. Multicolour polka dot installations, a colour-chainging light room, paintings, photographs and audiovisual installations told the story of Yayoi Kusama and her singular vision.

Sadly the works are no longer on display at Malba museum, however, it will be travelling around South America and the next stop is Rio de Janeiro (Oct. 2013 - Jan. 2013). Here are some snapshots of the show!
